Book Lovers, Bargain Hunters Invited to Voorhees Library Fall Sale

Sale supports public programming for kids, teens and adults at seven branches.

News release contact - web postings
Voorhees BookSale 3 V2
[The annual Fall Book Sale at Camden County Library System’s Voorhees branch attracts hundreds of book lovers and bargain hunters. Another big turnout is expected Thursday Oct. 13 – Saturday Oct. 15 at the M. Allan Vogelson Regional Branch Library on Laurel Oak Rd across from the Voorhees Town Center.]

VOORHEES, N.J. – Sept. 27, 2011 -- The Voorhees branch of the Camden County Library System will stage one of the largest used-book sales in South Jersey on Thursday, Oct. 13 and Friday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The library plans to offer up to 50 thousand books, CDs, videos, books-on-tape, LPs and magazines for sale at drastically reduced prices.

“According to used-book hunters, our sales have become a favorite for a number of reasons,” said M. Allan Vogelson Regional Library Branch Manager William Brahms.

He points out that about ninety percent of the items on sale are donated by patrons, collectors and estates, so they are not marked-up like some ex-library materials, which will make up the remainder of the items at the Fall Book Sale.

“With ninety-nine percent of the items priced at two dollars or under, and with nothing over three dollars, the sale will attract hundreds of bargain seekers over the course of three days as it’s done in the past,” predicted Brahms.

The branch manager said there is a reason to visit the sale on more than one day since the display tables in the sale area on the first floor will be continually replenished with stock from a warehouse storage room full of materials during the three-day sale.

The items will be organized by subject for easy location, which is important given the large number of items that will be put out. However, no previews will be available to dealers or others.

The M. Allan Vogelson Regional Branch Library is located at 203 Laurel Road across from the Voorhees Town Center, which is 14 miles from Philadelphia, ten miles from Camden and next to Cherry Hill. Directions can be found on the library website at http://www.camden.lib.nj.us/directions/directionsvoorhees.htm

All proceeds from the sale will go to support programs for customers of the Camden County Library SystemThe Library welcomes volunteers to help staff the book sale. They can contact Karen Popelak at 772-1636 ext. 3339 or at kpopel@camdencountylibrary.org. An application for volunteers can be found on the library’s website at http://www.camdencountylibrary.org/volunteers

Other questions about the book sale can be directed to Brahms at wbrahms@camdencountylibrary.org  or 856-772-1636 x3308.

Food for Thought: a Writing Workshop

Author Christina Baker Kline will present Food for Thought: a Writing Workshop at the Vogelson Branch (directions) on Wednesday May 28, from 1 p.m.-3 p.m.  She will also sign her book The Way Life Should Be

We eat; we talk, think, dream about food.  Like Proust, we all have our madeleines – those foods that trigger memory.  In this workshop we will explore the process of writing about food from one’s own experience, looking particularly at how memory and place can serve as points of departure.  In doing so, we will address issues of satiety and sustenance, longing and desire---Christina Baker Kline

Author Melissa Klapper to Visit Haddon Twp. Branch

KlapperAuthor Melissa Klapper will appear at the William G. Rohrer Memorial Library, Haddon Township Branch of the County Library System (directions) on May 30, 2007 at 7:00 to sign copies of her newest critically acclaimed book, “Small Strangers: The Experiences of Immigrant Children in America, 1880-1925” published by Ivan R. Dee. She will discuss her new book along with selected readings.

In one of history's most remarkable movements of people across national borders, almost twenty-five million immigrants came to the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-from Mexico, Japan, and Canada as well as the more common embarkation points of southern and eastern Europe. Many of them were children. SmallstrangersTogether with the American-born children of immigrants, they made up a significant part of turn-of-the-century society. Small Strangers recounts and interprets their varied experiences to illustrate how immigration, urbanization, and industrialization-all related processes-molded modern America. Dr. Klapper teaches history at Rowan University and is author of Jewish Girls Coming of Age in America, 1860-1920. Please call 856-854-2752 to reserve your copy of the book being sold at a discounted price of $21.00. Her first book will also be available for $32.

Voting Results for Best Book of the Past Ten Years

Kiterunner_1 The New York Times Book Review asked prominent writers, critics, editors and literary sages this question:  "What is the best work of American fiction of the last 25 years?"   Their top choice was Beloved by Toni Morrison. We asked Camden County Library staff and patrons for their choice for best book of the past ten years in an online survey.

Camden County readers were certainly not unanimous in their opinions -- they nominated 60 different titles for best book.  Their number one choice was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.  This 2003 novel traces the unlikely friendship of a wealthy Afghan youth and a servant's son, in a tale that spans the final days of Afghanistan's monarchy through the atrocities of the present day.    It has won a number of awards, including the San Francisco Chronicle’s Best Book of the Year, Entertainment Weekly’s Best Book 2003, and the Alex Award for 2004.

Three books tied for second place: The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, by Mark Haddon; and The Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom.  Albom has local roots -- he grew up in Haddon Township, one of our library communities.

You can see all 60 nominees at http://www.camdencountylibrary.org/readers/bestbook.htm  Request one today and see if you agree that it may well be the best book of the past ten years.
