Author Christina Baker Kline will present Food for Thought: a Writing Workshop at the Vogelson Branch (directions) on Wednesday May 28, from 1 p.m.-3 p.m.  She will also sign her book The Way Life Should Be

We eat; we talk, think, dream about food.  Like Proust, we all have our madeleines – those foods that trigger memory.  In this workshop we will explore the process of writing about food from one’s own experience, looking particularly at how memory and place can serve as points of departure.  In doing so, we will address issues of satiety and sustenance, longing and desire---Christina Baker Kline

Along the way, she gives us the comedies and heartbreaks of family life, a story of love and loss, and the mysteries of pasta, rolled into a perfect circle of gossamer dough.

Author Melissa Klapper to Visit Haddon Twp. Branch

KlapperAuthor Melissa Klapper will appear at the William G. Rohrer Memorial Library, Haddon Township Branch of the County Library System (directions) on May 30, 2007 at 7:00 to sign copies of her newest critically acclaimed book, “Small Strangers: The Experiences of Immigrant Children in America, 1880-1925” published by Ivan R. Dee. She will discuss her new book along with selected readings.

In one of history's most remarkable movements of people across national borders, almost twenty-five million immigrants came to the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-from Mexico, Japan, and Canada as well as the more common embarkation points of southern and eastern Europe. Many of them were children. SmallstrangersTogether with the American-born children of immigrants, they made up a significant part of turn-of-the-century society. Small Strangers recounts and interprets their varied experiences to illustrate how immigration, urbanization, and industrialization-all related processes-molded modern America. Dr. Klapper teaches history at Rowan University and is author of Jewish Girls Coming of Age in America, 1860-1920. Please call 856-854-2752 to reserve your copy of the book being sold at a discounted price of $21.00. Her first book will also be available for $32.
